Some chronic pain issues that Acupuncture has proven effective in treating include:

  • Pain management
  • Sports Medicine
  • Weight Loss
  • Smoking Cessation

How does Acupuncture work?

In traditional Chinese medicine, it’s felt that Acupuncture balances the flow of "chi" or energy through various pathways in your body. When you’re ill or injured, this energy flow is disrupted. It’s believed that inserting needles into points along these pathways rebalances the energy flow and increases your body’s ability to heal. Many American practitioners describe Acupuncture sites as areas where the needles stimulate nerves, muscles, and connective tissue, thus increasing blood flow and boosting natural painkillers.

Does it hurt?

No.

What happens during a treatment?

You’ll receive a full evaluation and discussion regarding the benefits, risks, and expected results of Acupuncture therapy before your first treatment. During the treatment, after you’ve gotten comfortable on a padded table, small, painless needles as thin as a hair are inserted at certain points in the skin. How many needles used and the length of time they remain in the skin depends on why you’re being treated. Your doctor may twirl or warm the needles during the session to intensify the effects. Some patients report a tiny pinprick sensation when the needles are inserted. Almost none of our patients have any discomfort and report feeling relaxed yet energized after a session.

Sometimes our Acupuncturists will employ the Electro-Acupuncture therapy. The needles are hooked up to an electrical stimulator for even, even deeper and more effective stimulation. This is so gentle - most people will fall asleep during treatment! It is very effective for a wide range of problems.

Will I need more than one treatment?

The number of Acupuncture treatments you’ll need depends on what you’re being treated for. The providers at South Lake Medical Center typically use Acupuncture as a stand-alone therapy or as an adjunct therapy that’s combined with Chiropractic care, Physiotherapy, Exercise and Rehabilitation, and other Medical treatments for optimal results.
